Opal Care

Opals are delicate, soft stones that require careful handling to avoid damage. To keep your opal jewelry in optimal condition, we strongly recommend removing it before engaging in activities where there is a risk of scratching or breaking, such as gardening or moving furniture.

General Care

  • Temperature and Humidity: Opals may crack if exposed to very dry or rapidly changing conditions and temperatures. Avoid wearing opal jewelry in high temperatures or low humidity extremes, such as boiling water.
  • Cleaning: Clean solid opals gently with mild detergent in warm water, using a soft toothbrush or cloth. Avoid bleach, chemicals, and harsh cleaners.

Doublets & Triplets

  • Water Exposure: Doublets and triplets, consist of multiple layers glued together, and can be damaged by prolonged exposure to water, which may cause the layers to lift and water to infiltrate. Avoid wearing these pieces in the shower to maintain their condition and avoid discoloration.
  • Cleaning: Wipe doublets and triplets with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent. Never soak or immerse them in water.

Professional Maintenance

  • Ultrasonic Cleaners: Never allow anyone to clean your opal in an ultrasonic cleaner, as intense vibrations can cause cracking in solid opals and water penetration in doublets or triplets.
  • Polishing: If your opal loses its shine or becomes scratched, take it to an opal cutter for professional polishing. Over time, small scratches and scuff marks can dull an opal's polish. Professional polishing can restore its shine and bring new life to your opal.
